The Experiences of Medical and Dental Clinical Academic Trainees in London

The key research objectives covered by this project were:

  • To explore how clinical academic trainee pathways are working in London for medicine and dentistry
  • To identify areas where pan-London collaboration could be utilised to address or alleviate any of the challenges encountered by individuals pursuing clinical academic training in London

Over the course of the 2017/18 academic year work on this project included: establishing a task group in order to shape and guide the project; interviews with stakeholders; surveying clinical academic trainees; conducting follow-up interviews with trainees; and gathering data on trainee numbers across London.

London Medicine hosted a symposium on 12 July 2018, at which stakeholders and trainees had an opportunity to discuss the key issues affecting clinical academic training in London, in both medicine and dentistry.

Two reports were published by London Medicine in July 2018, setting out our findings, as follows:

  • “Taking on the Challenge”: The Experiences of Medical and Dental Clinical Academic Trainees in London download PDF
  • Clinical Academic Routes in Medicine and Dentistry: survey and interview findingsdownload PDF

Additionally, as part of this project London Medicine is collating a number of case studies of clinical academic trainees across London. These will be published on this website during Summer 2018.
